Retirement is not without Hassles: Years #433

Life is full of ups and downs, and there are times when each of us have had enough. Then, as soon as we’re done feeling sorry for ourselves, we’re immediately praying for more. I feel fortunate to have lived longer at age 66 than most men of past generations. In fact, the average life span in 1900 was only 50. Current statistics indicate that I have at least 5 years yet to go, but I’m planning for 30. I’ve never had the desire to live to be one hundred, so thirty more years will be more than enough for me, probably until I get there. At that point, I will no longer be part of history, with little to account for my past.

I’m more than satisfied with what I’ve accomplished, and I know that my best chance in establishing immortality is through words. Many writers never achieved fame in their lifetimes, but their words have lived on forever. The more years left I have left to practice, the greater the chance of this happening. Over the next thirty years of my life, I will complete nearly 11,000 more of these posts, and certainly something of importance will come from that effort.

Often it’s not the days, weeks, and months that pass quickly, but rather the years. I was reminded of that today, as I got together with a friend that I’ve known for 50 years. It seems like just yesterday that we were college freshmen together, just starting out on our own. Even though we’ve parted ways many times since then, we bonded together again like we did when we first met. It’s remarkable to think about how much time has passed like seconds. It makes me want to hold on, knowing how quickly the next thirty years will go by, and how little time I have left to leave my mark. Life is precious but fleeting – make the most of it!

This is one of my favorite posts that you have written. #433…with 11,000 still to come. All of those words in all of those forthcoming posts will be important, because YOU will have written them.
