Not sure I can “justify” spending several days of my life to watch the Amazon Prime series Justified. Six seasons with 78 episodes, each an hour long. Combine that with other favorites like Longmire, Deadwood, Outlander, Sneaky Pete, Tin Star, Bosch, etc, and binge watching can be an extensive investment habit.

I’ve found that watching shows on my laptop rather than a fixed TV screen allows me to multitask or even go outdoors. I can fold laundry, unload the dishwasher, shave, organize my closet or drawers, cook, or dust while absorbing episode after episode. It doesn’t seem so wasteful if I’m working other projects into the mix. For variety and excitement I add sports, and for educational purposes I include historical documentaries.

When I’m writing or working on my laptop, I always have the TV on in the background. There’s one on the wall of my office next to the desk so I can keep an eye on scores, highlights, news, Pawn Stars, American Pickers, or any number of other mindless programs or movies.

I’m sure this sounds pretty boring to most people, but I actually enjoy the days when I’m a homebody. I was at another black-tie fundraiser last night and will be out of town the next couple of  weeks, so I get plenty of opportunities to interact with new people and places. After my daily run, it feels good to be alone and relaxed, with no place to go. After all, I spent my entire career socializing, presenting, preparing, and making sales calls. I do not miss it.

Yes, I’m a TV junkie, as it provides all the companionship I need during the day without the need to reciprocate. I enjoy the frequent dog breaks, as we all wait for my wife to come home from work. As a retiree, this is now my only job, and I collect several paychecks for doing it. It’s the sole “justification” that I need. Once more, I should have bet on Justify to win the Kentucky Derby.
