On our recent trip to San Francisco we went to our favorite antique store, Gaslights and Shadows. Phyllis Nabhan, the owner since 1976, is know for many things including running the Bay to Breakers race for what I believe was 38 straight years. The last couple of years she was unable to continue, so she made a film. Her store was closed on Sunday, but we looked at some of her Limoges boxes in the front window, including a wedding cake topped by bride and groom that my wife had an eye on. I’ve been collecting from Phyllis for years so when we got back to Portland, I called and made arrangements to have it shipped. The design is an appropriate gift because of the upcoming weddings of her two daughters. As part of the poem that accompanies each of these in our collection, I suggested that we bring it out on each of their anniversaries like we do with “Birthday Bear.” (See Post #567).

Wedding Belles

As little girls,
You knew someday.
That wedding chimes,
For both would play.

You wished for them,
They’d meet someone.
And say to you,
“This is ‘The One.’”

You’ve waited now,
For many years.
With vows exchanged,
For all their peers.

They’ve dated pigs,
Gone out with dogs.
Met Mr.Wrongs,
And kissed some frogs.

Their Fairy Tales,
Now coming true.
Not just one wedding,
But suddenly Two!

I’m sure you’ll treasure,
The days ahead.
As Megan & Miranda,
Are both finally wed.

They start new lives,
With Mitch and Ben.
It’s time to ask,
Marry Me again?

You’ve raised them strong,
Showed them the way.
One in Portland,
The other -The Bay.

They’ll say “I Do,”
Two months apart.
You couldn’t be prouder,
With a second heart.

As each of them,
Walks down the aisle.
I know I’ll see,
Your brightest smile.

I understand that there,
Might not be cake?
To me, this is,
Their only mistake.

But not to worry!
Like “Birthday Bear,”
This Limoges,
Can always be there.

While you shine twice,
As Mother-of-the-Bride.
My abundant love,
Will be at your side.
