Retirement is certainly a great reward for many years of working, but it does come with some traps. I just fell into one.
I like to think of myself as somewhat intelligent, certainly experienced at life. I’ve had my share of scares, scams, and surprises, and expect that will never end. I’ve gotten calls from fake tax collecting agencies, disreputable charities, and have made a few “bad clicks.” Well, I did it again, simply because I had too much time on my hands.
I had just signed up for Amazon Prime, a good company, because I am doing more on-line shopping. It was worth a membership to expedite shipping and save money. I also signed up for the Harris Poll, another reputable company, that will pay me a few bucks to monitor my Amazon purchases. I didn’t do it because I need the money. I did it because I know the value of research in making business decisions – and I have the time now to help with that.
In the process of making those decisions, I got a “timely” e-mail from Amazon, asking me to fill out a survey. I’m sure, in retrospect, that it was not coincidental – there are too many “eyes” out there. Retirees are definitely a target for consumer fraud – since apparently with more time on our hands we lose our brains. I must have lost mine – temporary senior insanity – a brain fart that I just had to vent about.
One of the “incentives” for taking the Amazon survey was a skin care product from Kiara. I recall feeling a bit dissatisfied with the incentive choices after taking my valuable time to fill out the survey. However, a sense of entitlement swept over me, disconnected me from my brain, and made me click on the offer. Suddenly, all that time I had seemed to have quickly disappeared, and I didn’t read the small print. Bad mistake!
There apparently were two offers and I immediately got a fraud alert from my bank. I had indeed agreed to the one product, so I thought nothing of it. The second product I did not agree to and the bank rejected the purchase at my request. I wish I would have listened to them and rejected both!
Kiara Skin charged me $4.95 for shipping and I was expecting that the package would arrive by Amazon, since in my mind there was some kind of a partnership between them and the Skin Care Company. The package did not arrive by Amazon – another key warning of a problem. Soon, there was an additional $98.41 charge on my credit card – I called them immediately. Some incentive, huh!
The only reason I had there phone number is because it was on the credit card statement from the prior month for the $4.95 charge. The woman on the phone was quite rude and obviously programmed to only say great things about the product and not listen to me. There were no refunds – it was a trial and I didn’t respond in time. I asked to speak to a supervisor but she said it would do no good – they would fully support her answers.
I wondered about customer satisfaction, good service, and fraudulent business practices. How could a company possibly survive with this attitude? I felt sure that Amazon would feel the same way, so I copied their fraud department on an e-mail that expressed my discontent. I did hear back immediately from Kiara Skin that they could issue me an unacceptable discount. Amazon also responded immediately with an automated message implying how silly it was of me to fall for this scam (or any scam for that matter). I’m “sure” they will get back to me in a more personal manner, but in the meantime I promised Kiara that I would relentlessly pursue a full refund. After all, little do they know, they’re dealing with someone who apparently has too much time on his hands.
