I have now been officially retired for just over two months. My “60 day trial” has been completed and I need to report on my progress. I just hope this retirement offer doesn’t have an expiration date, because I’m really enjoying myself. Of the first 60 days: 5 have been snow days, 3 have been Holidays, and 17 have been weekends. With this in mind, that leaves only 35 days of actual retirement, and I’ve spent 7 of those days traveling. 20% of my retirement has been spent away from home. I feel that’s a pretty good balance to maintain, since there’s no place like home.
I arrived home last night at 1 a.m. after 7 hours on airplanes. My air travel so far this year has taken me from Oregon to Washington to Arizona and to Florida and back. I’ve only set foot in five states, but have flown over many more. As some comedians have joked, “my arms are very tired.” Traveling is an important part of retirement – but it’s not without hassles. There is no routine when you’re traveling and that tends to be exhausting. My adventures included the desert, the beach, the track, the ball diamond, and the Crayola Experience. I ate a lot of fast food, spent time with my grandchildren, and slept in strange beds (and not very well). I am certainly glad to be home for a few weeks, reunited with my wife and my routine.
I enjoy traveling but never enjoyed going to work the next day. Yes, it’s great to have an audience for your adventures, but the “jet set” life takes a lot out of an old guy like me. I’m honestly glad that I don’t have the funds to do it all the time, and I certainly don’t want to burn myself out in the first couple years of retirement. At this pace though, I will be on the road 10 to 12 weeks this year at an estimated expense of $72,000. If you get on an airplane, stay in a hotel, take a cruise, entertain family, buy event tickets, pay for pet care, and dine out regularly, as we do, it breaks down to about $1,200 a day or more when you travel! Hopefully, we won’t too addicted to travel, or I’ll need to find a job to supplement my fix.
