After yesterday’s post about my wife’s fear of alligators (See Post #1708), I suddenly realized that I’ve started drinking Gatorade and wondered if there was a connection. Is it a magic potent designed to both quench thirst and repel these slimy, fanged beasts? Or is this something that happens when you become a Florida resident? After all it was invented here: “The beverage was first developed in 1965 by a team of researchers led by Robert Cade. It was originally made for the Gators at the University of Florida to replenish the carbohydrates that the school’s student-athletes burned and the combination of water and electrolytes that they lost in sweat during rigorous sports activities.”
Admittedly, I haven’t sweated like this in years, yet I’m not really losing any weight. My garage is like a sauna, as I continue to organize and unpack boxes from the move. Plus, my shirt is usually soaked when I return from my morning runs. In Portland, I would barely break a sweat, but instead perpetually damp from the moisture in the air. When we went to the grocery store a few weeks ago, I picked up some G2 to make me feel more like an athlete. I now try to finish a bottle after every run, waiting for an endorsement opportunity.
I went the lower sugar route that adds 50 calories to my daily consumption. It has to be better than the Diet Coke habit that I had finally ended in Portland only to have a relapse once I got to thirsty Florida. I’m constantly drinking something whether it be colas, water, energy drinks, wine, or Vodka. Margarita’s are also particularly tasty after a day in the sun. I think I need a Water Boy with one of those big coolers you see on the football sidelines. Please pass the Gatorade.
